COMING SOON!

THAO & THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN
+ special guest Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside
Tuesday, March 19th,2013 @ The Grey Eagle
$12 advance/$15 day-of
Tickets available now @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

On February 5, Ribbon Music is set to release We the Common, the third full-length album from critically acclaimed artist Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. The album cut "Holy Roller" is streaming now at www.thaoandthegetdownstaydown.com. Frontwoman Thao Nguyen notes that the track "was the first song I wrote for this new record...it marked a shift in how I operate. I was steadily, in an overdue way, becoming grateful for everything and everyone I had. I tried to capture a sense of revival and a determination to be better."

Recorded at San Francisco's Tiny Telephone Studios and Dallas' Elmwood Studio, We the Common was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Bill Callahan, the Walkmen, Explosions in the Sky) and features a duet with Joanna Newsom on the track "Kindness Be Conceived." Thao observes, "We the Common is an album about wanting to be a human who tries and is grateful for the opportunity. It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. I have had over a year respite from touring and recording-in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into." The album is the follow-up to Thao's 2009 release Know Better Learn Faster, which Pitchfork praised for its "warm exuberance that keeps the music spry" while SPIN noted that Thao's "lazily smoky voice has its bitterly harsh moments, but her coolly analytical self-awareness stings the most."

Based in San Francisco after growing up in Falls Church, VA, Thao Nguyen first picked up a guitar at age 12. She has worked with a long list of acclaimed artists including Andrew Bird, Mirah, Laura Veirs and producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens) and has recorded a pair of critically acclaimed records for Kill Rock Stars, 2008's We Brave Bee Stings and All and the aforementioned 2009 release Know Better Learn Faster with her backing band the Get Down Stay Down. Since her last album Thao has worked with the artist advocacy non-profit Air Traffic Control (http://atctower.net/) and has volunteered extensively with the California Coalition for Women Prisoners. This year, in addition to recording her forthcoming album, Thao has toured the US with the nationally syndicated NPR program "Radiolab."

"Ms. Nguyen's voice, wobbly and rich, is engaging, and her gently confessional lyrics...are equally beguiling."-The New York Times

CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING
+ special guests Talk Normal
Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 @ The Grey Eagle
$12 advance/$15 day-of
Tickets available now @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING is the current group led by Sonic Youth founder Thurston Moore. He is the songwriter and plays over-amped hyper electric guitar and sings with raw-glam-destructo vocals. The band is a four piece featuring Samara Lubelski, who has played violin with TM on his last two solo LPs (Demolished Thoughts and Trees Outside The Academy) and with CHELSEA LIGHT MOVING plays deep psyche pop metal bass guitar. Keith Wood, who records under the aegis Hush Arbors, plays electric guitar with a pick forged from angel wing and John Moloney, aka “Pegasus”, approaches the drums like an asteroid hurtling toward Earth. The first CD self-titled was recorded in two spurious sessions with engineer Justin Pizzoferrato in Sone Lab, a killer studio in Easthampton MASSACHUSETTS. The band is ready to detonate any birthday party, wedding or hullaboo in any country, planet or stratosphere that doesn’t support right wing extremist NRA sucking bozo-ology.

Tickets available now @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

Earth is an American musical group based in Seattle, Washington, formed in 1990 and led by guitarist Dylan Carlson. Earth's music is mostly instrumental, and can be divided into two distinct stages. Their early work grew out of the Seattle-area grunge scene and is recognized as pioneering the genre of drone doom — an experimental offshoot of doom metal, characterized by droning, minimalist, lengthy, and repetitive structures. Earth's early albums were usually recorded as a duo (Carlson and a bass guitarist), and could be seen as a variation of the experimental doom-influenced metal of The Melvins. Earth currently features a markedly different sound, slow-paced and lengthy, but now with a drummer and featuring strong elements of country music and jazz. Dylan Carlson founded the band in 1990 along with Slim Moon and Greg Babior. Carlson has remained the core of the band's line-up throughout its changes. Current players have included: Adrienne Davies on drums, Lori Goldston on Cello, Karl Blau on bass, Steve Moore on keys and Don McGreevey on bass.

Harvest is once again super excited to be involved with MOOGFEST 2012!

It's surely going to be a stellar weekend of epic, bizarre, mind-bending sonic adventures.

Here's a list of reasons to stop by Harvest during the weekend...

#1: FESTIVAL GOERS GET A DISCOUNT

Show that you're attending Moogfest and get 10% OFF your entire purchase!

#2: MAGNETIC FIELDS AUTOGRAPH SIGNING

Be here at 1pm on Saturday to meet Magnetic Fields. A dream come true!

Bring some of your own personal collection to get signed, OR you KNOW we'll have plenty of M.F. product already in stock for you to purchase -- including some very rare white vinyl copies of their most recent record "Love at the Bottom of the Sea", courtesy of our buddies at Merge Records!

#3: HERBERT DEUTSCH.

While Bob Moog is regarded the inventor of the Moog synthesizer, musician and composer Herb Deutsch was an invaluable partner in developing the instrument for musical use. Composing the first piece of music for the original synthesizer, suggesting the keyboard interface, and relaying to Moog the potential benefits and improvements for musicians and composers, Deutsch established himself as a solid collaborator and a pioneer in his own right.

JOIN MR. DEUTSCH AT HARVEST ON FRIDAY AT 4pm!

He will be performing on the Minimoog, playing some cuts off his new collection "From Moog to Mac", and giving a brief talk about his experiences with Bob Moog and beyond.

And finally,

MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK HERE AND FOLLOW OUR TWITTER ACCOUNT HERE

throughout the weekend for updates, and beyond, forever, until the world ends in December!

(more Moogfest info below... don't forget the JUSTICE kickoff show is Thursday!...)

MOUNT EERIE
+ special guest Meghanz
Thursday, September 20th @ The Grey Eagle
$10
Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

I am Phil Elverum. Here is my brief autobiography for journalists and fact seekers:

I am 33 years old. I am from the town of Anacortes, Washington. Since 1997 my primary life’s work has been making studio-based music, first under the name “the Microphones” (1997 – 2002) and then “Mount Eerie” (2003 – present). In addition to this I have played in other bands (D+, Old Time Relijun), produced other peoples’ recordings and dabbled in painting, writing, and photography.

Aside from 5 years in Olympia, Wash. and a long winter in northern Norway (2002/2003), I have lived most of my life in Anacortes and much of the content of my music and other art is tied to the place. My music project Mount Eerie is named after the actual mountain, Mt. Erie, that lies just south of town. I try to make music that feels associated with this particular place in some way, whether it’s literally described in words or just an ambiguous feeling.

The “Microphones era” in Olympia (1997-2002) was very prolific, with 5 major albums (and many smaller things) being released by the K label. The most critically acclaimed was “the Glow pt. 2” (2001). Following that was an album called “Mount Eerie” by the Microphones.

I did not feel totally satisfied artistically with my exploration of the “Mount Eerie” idea on the album of that name so in 2003 I changed the name of my whole project to Mount Eerie. I did this partly to explore the idea more deeply and partly because the name had become more relevant to my songs than “the Microphones”, not to mention the appeal of being conceptually rooted to an actual place.

In 2004 I started releasing my own projects via the “P.W. Elverum & Sun, ltd.” company in an attempt to become even more self-sufficient and also to be able to explore unusual packaging ideas. The first major release was “No Flashlight” by Mount Eerie (2005) which came wrapped in a gargantuan poster. Since then I have released many fancy LPs and an extravagant art book of photography. I continue to explore new ideas for mass producing art and music in a homemade style. P.W. Elverum & Sun remains primarily a vehicle for my own projects only, not a real record label. Deeper simple self-sufficiency seems to be a good way to weather the tumultuous times we live in.

Here’s what the journalist Brandon Stosuy said to describe what my stuff is actually about (in the Believer): “Regardless of the moniker, the various collections include interlocking themes, references to earlier works, and are marked by Elverum’s distinctive naturalist self-recorded lo-fi analog sound that mixes a whispered, gentle voice, which can also yell and bellow, with various strains of sound: His work can be delicately spare or booming and ambitiously layered and noisy, often in the same song. Lyrically, he focuses on memory, first-person storytelling, myth, naturalism, the everyday as sacred, and a sense of place (in and out of Washington State), among other related things.”

STEVE GUNN
&
WILLIAM TYLER
Wednesday, September 5th 2012 @ Harvest
$5 at the door

Nowadays, there are so many great solo guitar players mining a vein started by John Fahey and extended by everyone from Loren Connors to Jim O’Rourke. There are so many, in fact, that standing out is almost impossible. Yet Steve Gunn has somehow managed that trick. That’s not strictly due to his ability as a player—though he is eminently skilled—but more to his knack for discovering varied styles and settings in which to couch that string-stretching talent.

His 2009 solo masterpiece, Boerum Palace, saw him exploring slow ballads, simply-strummed ditties, lengthy raga/ psych hybrids, twangy country meditations and sprightly bluegrass-inflected jaunts.

Gunn’s deft diversity continues on Sand City, his 2010 duo record with drummer John Trucsinski. Over the course of four tracks, the pair revels in jams that all have a searching, mountain-climbing quality. It’s as if when each track starts, they have a summit in their sights and the knowledge that all it takes to get there is the right chords and rhythms. Gunn hits the target every time, from his winding, snake-charming acoustic plucks that weave around Truscinki’s beat on “Takism II” to the cascading electric circles he runs during the dizzying “Wythe Raag.” This means it’s anyone’s guess what he’ll play when he performs, but you can bet it will still sound like Steve Gunn.
- Marc Masters

William Tyler is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, a town where guitarists are as common as television sets or pigeons. At an early age, he began playing and recording with artists that resided at the fringes of the country and folk vernacular, such as the Silver Jews, Lambchop, and Cortney Tidwell. He also found himself doing session work with artists as diverse as country legend Charlie Louvin and soul singer Candi Staton. All the while, Tyler was at home working on fragmentary guitar pieces and tape collages under the moniker the Paper Hats, calling on the spirit of Sandy Bull and the early Siltbreeze catalog. In 2008, his longtime friend and sometime collaborator Volker Zander released a Paper Hats lp “Deseret Canyon” on his Apparent Extent imprint, and the two toured in Europe.

Now Tyler has released his first album under his own name, “Behold the Spirit” (Tompkins Square), a collection of acoustic and electric guitar works intertwined with open form audio landscapes and delicately arranged instrumentation. Equal parts Appalachian drone and ambient noise, “Behold the Spirit” is a series of homages to ancient melodies, dead languages, and ghosts. Live, Tyler has collaborated or shared bills with Eric Carbonara, David Daniell, Wooden Wand, Paul Metzger, Datashock, Mountains, and Steve Gunn, among others.

zammuto

ZAMMUTO
(Nick from The Books!)
Saturday, September 8th @ The Grey Eagle
$10
Tickets available now @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

Sprouting from the same mind that created the Books - one of the most acclaimed and innovative groups of the past decade - Zammuto marks a deep reinvention of the highly detailed, genre-defying spirit that made seminal albums such as The Lemon of Pink and The Way Out possible. Given the Books' success as an experimental collage-pop project, founder and namesake Nick Zammuto could have comfortably extended that thread. Instead he has given us a record that is progressive and forward-looking, intense and driven, with hugely varied rhythms and melodies. The whispered, folksy vocals that became a trademark of the Books are for the most part shed in favor of an uncharacteristically confident, soaring delivery, often fueled by a wide array of vocal effects. The result is a man-machine sensitivity that ultimately enhances the songs' emotional intensity. With dense and beautiful string arrangements by Gene Back (the Books) and brain-warping drum performances by Sean Dixon, the radical and varied sound of Zammuto leaps out of speakers with a searing directness.

Making music that sounds and feels like no one else is nothing new for Zammuto, but making music that doesn't even sound like his own past is a whole other impressive feat in itself.

SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS
+ Exitmusic
Friday, April 6th @ The Grey Eagle
$10 advance, $12 day-of
Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Static Age, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

School Of Seven Bells are back with their third release, Ghostory, out February 28 on Vagrant Records/Ghostly Inernational. The highly-anticipated album finds the band’s lineup has evolved along with the music; formerly a trio, the band is now a duo: guitarist/producer Benjamin Curtis and vocalist Alejandra Deheza.

Recorded in-between tours, Ghostory exemplifies a fervent progression of SVIIB’s growth as artists, preserving the common themes found on their last two releases but exposing them in different fashions. The familiar ethereal and enigmatic tones are omnipresent, surrounded by layers of influences from ’80s pop, shoegaze and ambient electronic sounds. However, Ghostory comes with a story in mind; the tale of a young girl named Lafaye and the ghosts that surround her life.

“Everyone has ghosts”, says Alejandra Deheza; “They’re every love you’ve ever had, every hurt, every betrayal, every heartbreak. They follow you, stay with you.” This detailed storytelling is evident from start to finish on the record, weaving a tale that moves between a fervent synthesized adventure and spacious lyrical euphoria. Tracks like “Love Play” and “Show Me Love” create a hauntingly indelible atmosphere that grab attention with the ambitious wordplay in the center of it all. Surrounding tracks like “Lafaye” and “Scavenger” entice the vibe of previous School of Seven Bells releases with their steadily dance-centric tempo and uplifting melodic progressions. Ghostory flows seamlessly and effortlessly, a result of the shared songwriting process.

“Ghostory is our most collaborative music to date,” describes Benjamin Curtis, “Alley (Alejandra) and I have always written our music together, but always independently and on our own time. We knew we wanted to do something that was more sensual and spontaneous than anything we had ever done before, and that meant writing together in a room, coming up with ideas quickly and immediately reacting to what the other person was doing.” Within Ghostory, the story of both Lafaye’s and the band’s journey will be told.

School Of Seven Bells formed in 2006 as a trio (including Claudia Deheza) and released their debut full-length, Alpinisms, on Ghostly International in 2008. The group’s appeal grew exponentially, with their signature sounds stemming from pieces of electronic subgenres and shoegaze bands before them. By 2010, the group released the critically acclaimed Disconnect From Desire on Ghostly International and Vagrant. Ghostory is truly their defining work, beautifully crafted and haunting, with the story of Lafaye permeating the psyche long after the music stops.

WASHED OUT
Friday, May 18th @ Asheville Music Hall
SORRY, THIS SHOW IS 21+
$12 advance, $15 day-of
Tickets available SOON @ Harvest & online HERE.

Within and Without is the debut album by 28 year-old Atlanta-based songwriter and producer Ernest Greene, AKA Washed Out. Long adored and critically lauded in the blog world, Greene first came to prominence in the summer of 2009 after unassumingly posting a handful of bedroom-recorded tracks to his Myspace page from his family home in the seclusion of the tiny rural city of Perry, Georgia. “I’d been writing music on my own for three or four years previous to that,” Greene explains, “mostly as a way to experiment with songwriting processes. Those were just the first I ever shared.”

Despite such modest intentions however, those first songs (many of which would appear on the acclaimed Life of Leisure EP of later that year) were about as complete an opening statement from an artist as imaginable. A heady, psychedelic concoction of what Pitchfork’s Mark Hogan termed “romantic nostalgia and homespun textures,” songs such as “Belong” and “Feel It All Around”—Greene’s biggest hit to date—artfully match the glossy melody of ’80s synth pop, the widescreen scope of early ’90s Balearic dance music and the slowed, heavy bounce of southern Hip Hop production to gorgeously wistful vocals with results as undeniably idiosyncratic and original as they are deeply accessible.

BOMBINO
Thursday, May 3rd @ The Grey Eagle
$12 advance, $15 day-of
Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Static Age, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

Omara "Bombino" Moctar, whose given name is Goumar Almoctar, was born on January 1st, 1980 in Tidene, Niger, an encampment of nomadic Tuaregs located about 80 kilometers to the northeast of Agadez. He is a member of the Ifoghas tribe, which belongs to the Kel Air Tuareg federation. His father is a car mechanic and his mother takes care of the home, as is the Tuareg tradition. Bombino was raised as a Muslim and taught to consider honor, dignity and generosity as principal tenets of life.

Bombino spent his early childhood between the encampment and the town of Agadez, the largest city in northern Niger (population about 90,000) and long a key part of the ancient Sahara trade routes connecting North Africa and the Mediterranean with West Africa. One of seventeen brothers and sisters (including half brothers and half sisters from both his mother and father), Bombino was enrolled in school in Agadez, but he demonstrated his rebellious spirit early on and refused to go. Bombino's grandmother took him in to keep his father from forcing him to go to school, and, like most Tuareg children, he grew up living with his grandmother.

In 2006, Bombino traveled to California with the band Tidawt for a tour organized by a non-profit organization. During the trip, he had the chance to record a desert blues version of the Rolling Stones classic "Hey Negrita" alongside Stones' members Keith Richards and Charlie Watts. The track appears on the 2008 album spearheaded by Rolling Stones saxophonist Tim Riese entitled Stone's World: The Rolling Stones Project Volume 2. Later that year, Bombino served as Angelina Jolie's guide to the Niger desert region during a weeklong visit. During their time together, he played her the music of the Tuareg and told her stories of nomadic life in the Sahara.

In 2009, he met filmmaker Ron Wyman who had heard a cassette of Bombino's music while traveling near Agadez. Wyman was enchanted by Bombino's music and spent a year seeking him out, eventually tracking him down to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where Bombino was living in exile. While there, Wyman decided to feature Bombino in a documentary he was filming about the Tuareg. Later that year, he brought Bombino to Cambridge, Massachusetts to begin recording the album Agadez in his home studio.

Bombino's electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.

DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!!

KURT VILE and the VIOLATORS
Sunday, March 25th @ The Grey Eagle
$12/$15
Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Static Age, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

Kurt Vile has a way of tying time in knots. You can hear it on his new album Smoke Ring For My Halo from the get-go – the pinwheeling guitars and reaching atmospheres of ‘Baby’s Arms’ are as strange as they are familiar: a demonstration of how Kurt can put worn methods and sounds through himself and end up with something that isn’t emotionally or sonically obvious. Instead we’re left with a record that contains traces of the past but doesn’t waste precious time in the now being reverent.

Once compared to Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty, Psychic TV, and Animal Collective in the same review (for 2009’s Childish Prodigy), Kurt can bring to mind anything from Suicide to Leo Kottke to My Bloody Valentine, Bob Seger, Nick Drake, and Eastern ragas. Still, he pieces together these disparate elements so seamlessly and unpretentiously that such reference points are rendered pointless by the singularity of his sound. Kurt Vile might belong to a long lineage of classic American songwriters, but he’s the only one who’s alive and in his prime today.

This is the fourth time Kurt Vile has put an album’s worth of songs together and stuck a name on it, but in a sense Smoke Ring For My Halo is his first real album – every flinching guitar arpeggio and vocal wander was made to be here, made with this record in mind, to sit alongside another in situ and in sequence. It seems weird saying this given the amount of ground he’s covered already, but Smoke Ring For My Halo is the perfect way into the music Kurt Vile makes. It’s tender and evocative, elusive but companionable, tough in the gut and the arm but swollen in the chest and giddy in the head. It’s a record that is perfect for any given day during whatever season, to satisfy all moods in every possible scenario – be that first thing in the morning or last thing at night; today, tomorrow or five years from now.

In short, it’s real. Kurt Vile isn’t just the loneliest of ten siblings born to parents on the outskirts of Philadelphia, the former forklift truck driver who makes rock band guitar songs in the solitude of his bedroom. Smoke Ring For My Halo brings all of that together, marrying the introspection of the nocturnal stoner with the exploration of a troubadour frontiersman to arrive at a record you know is so much more than the sum of his and its constituent parts because often he sounds like he doesn’t know how he got there himself.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS
+ Nurses
Thursday, February 2nd @ The Grey Eagle
$16 advance, $18 day-of
Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Static Age, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

One small word about these shows, from head Mountain Goat John Darnielle himself!....:
For years bands have been pretty judicious about playing unreleased new material, because much of it becomes available online immediately, even when the new songs are still in fairly raw form. We, too, have gotten into the bad habit of holding new stuff back. We are done with that whole philosophy, though. I miss playing stuff that's unreleased & unrecorded, stuff that still stings fresh. So we got together and decided to tour the new songs before we even record them. I don't guess that we'll be touring all ten of the new songs I've written for the next album (eleven if you count one that's presently being herded back and forth between its cell & the chopping block), but be advised that if you're the sort of person who wants as many surprises as possible when you hear a new album, you should tread lightly around recordings of these shows, because we're not going to be holding the best ones back for the album release like people tend to do now.

The Mountain Goats' new album is called 'All Eternals Deck,' and if you're reading this, that means you've got some sort of copy of it. "The songs cluster around themes of hidden things and the dread that hidden things inspire," says singer/songwriter John Darnielle, "but also the excitement, the attraction, the magnetic draw that scary unknown hidden things exert." The title refers to an apocryphal tarot deck, though Darnielle explains that the album's fascination with the occult originates in having run across the word “occult” in a textbook in his nursing-student days. "’Occult’ just means ‘hidden’ or ‘not immediately obvious’ in medical terminology. There was a nursing directive to be aware of ‘occult blood.’ I thought it was the greatest thing I’d ever heard," he says.

Darnielle started recording songs while during his psych-nurse days in California. "I had been writing poetry pretty much all my life," he remembers. "At some point in Norwalk I bought a guitar from this really cool old music store in a strip mall, and I started teaching myself to play." Soon Darnielle was playing live, touring with bassist Rachel Ware and then with multi-instrumentalist Peter Hughes. In 2001 they became a full-time studio-and-road-show duo, releasing four albums together: 'Tallahassee,' 'We Shall All Be Healed,' 'The Sunset Tree,' and 'Get Lonely.' Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster joined in 2007, and the collaboration clicked perfectly. "Peter and I had played with other musicians," says Darnielle, "but with Wurster we were an honest-to-God trio. We played together with real glee."

The band toured the U.S., England, Australia, and New Zealand extensively, recording a new studio album called 'The Life of the World to Come' in 2009 that prompted GQ to remark: “Darnielle’s not just one of the greatest songwriters working today--he’s probably one of the greatest working writers." The album earned a 'Best New Music' nod from Pitchfork, and prompted Stephen Colbert to invite the band to make its national television debut on The Colbert Report.

In 2010, the band signed to Merge Records, headquartered within walking distance of Darnielle's Durham, NC home. The band approached recording sessions for 'All Eternals Deck' as commando raids on multiple studios with a several producers: four songs at North Carolina's Fidelitorium with John Congleton; one at Q Division in Boston with longtime soundman Brandon Eggleston; four at Brooklyn's Mission Sound with Scott Solter; and four at Mana Recording Studios in Florida, with Morbid Angel guitarist and Hate Eternal helmsman Erik Rutan.

"We wanted to see how disparate seasons and moods and locations and producers would play out in the songs," explains Darnielle. The result? "If you've ever watched, say, a 70s occult-scare movie where one of the scenes involves a few people visiting a storefront fortune teller, getting their cards read, and then they're trying to feel super-hopeful about their predicted outcome when what they're visibly actually feeling is dread, then you have a pretty decent idea of what this album is all about."

Nathan Salsburg was born in that Diamond City, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania—she of anthracite glimmer and Babe Ruth's 1926 long ball—and is a longtime resident of Louisville, Kentucky. He is a folklorist and a producer and presenter of traditional music for East Village Radio, the Drag City imprint Twos & Fews, and the Alan Lomax Archive, among other outlets. His first solo record is called Affirmed, and it's about race horses—Affirmed, Bold Ruler, and Eight Belles, specifically—and desire and reckonings of the spirit. It's an almost entirely instrumental affair, save his elegiac rendering of the traditional tune "The False True Love."

While comparisons to John Fahey may be inevitable—and there are worse curses, to be sure—the similarity that Salsburg bears to that great master is mostly one of maverick aesthetic. For where Fahey spent his career a hungry ghost in some supernal Valley of Tears—in the process paving the way for a million joyless ragas by pickers that learned the wrong lesson—Salsburg's brambly rags and sundowner hymns incorporate an arch, bittersweet harmony that marks the best work of guitarists like Reverend Gary Davis, Ry Cooder, and Nic Jones. He plays like he knows that happiness is made of sad, and every tragedy is kind of funny, in its way.

I hear it took Salsburg a long time to make Affirmed, and it sounds it. Not because the picking is complicated, which it is—I suspect Nathan will eventually be recognized as among the foremost American acoustic guitarists, for anyone keeping that score—but because there is so much emotion here, so much full-grown, that it must have taken a life, at least.

Affirmed is a personal record—for Salsburg, surely, but for me too. I'm getting older, and my relationship to music now develops vertically rather than horizontally. I need something that has some stake to it, because I'm trying to find the light myself. We used to play for silver; now we play for life. Like that. So I'll damn right sing you every note on Tom T.'s Old Five and Dimers Like Me; but if art's not open—and that's the word I use to describe Affirmed: open—then what good is it to your soul? I'm talking about grown-up things here, things that set the bitch of this whole journey in relief: Barry Hannah's Ray, or Sammi Smith's version of "Saunder's Ferry Lane," or Duke Ellington's "Blue Indigo." I count Affirmed among these.

Put another way: It's easy to write a song in a minor key and play it sad, but so much harder—though truer to life, I reckon—to play blue in a major key. Nathan Salsburg does this with Affirmed. He does it so well. Hats off to him.

ZOLA JESUS
+ Talk Normal
Tuesday, February 14th @ The Grey Eagle
$10 advance, $12 day-of
Tickets available NOW @ Harvest, Orbit DVD, Static Age, Grey Eagle & online HERE.

In the last three years Nika Roza Danilova has gone from being an outsider experimental teenage noise-maker to a full fledged internationally celebrated electronic pop musician. It was a huge feat to accomplish, and despite her age (young), her geography (mid-western, desolate), her accelerated scholastic requirements (high school and college were completed in three years each) and her diminutive physical size (4”11, 90 lbs) she has triumphed. She has emerged as a figurehead—a self-produced, self-designed, self-taught independent woman.

Zola Jesus is not a singer; she is a musician. Zola Jesus is not a band; it is a solo project. That is not to say the people who have helped her along the way were not deeply important. Her irreplaceable live band, who’s drummer Nick Johnson lends a hand on several tracks here, and her friend Brian Foote who co-produced this album in addition to the live string players (Sean McCann, Ryan York) who contribute here were all crucial in the process. Nika however, is a woman who can command a room, any room, without needing a band, a stage, or even a microphone. Her voice is unmistakable; it cuts right to the core.

Conatus is a huge leap forward in production, instrumentation and song structure. It says it all in the definition of the title: the will to keep on, to move forward. From thumping ballads to electronic glitch, no sound goes unexplored on her new record. It is an icy exploration in refined chaos and controlled madness, an effort to break through capability and access a sonic world that crumbles as it shines.
